We often get asked what our tins are made of and whether they contain substances like Bisphenol A (BPA). Let us reassure you right away: our tins are 100% safe. It would be a shame to put high-quality, organic extra virgin olive oil into something potentially harmful, right? Let us explain everything clearly!
What is BPA?
Let’s start at the beginning and explain what BPA is. After all, 99% of the questions we get are about this. BPA is a chemical found in many plastic products, such as electronics and plastic bottles. It’s also used in food packaging materials like cans. The issue is that it can leach into food in small amounts.
Various studies have shown that BPA can be harmful to your health. It may affect your immune system, disrupt hormone levels, harm fertility, and cause irritation to skin and respiratory tracts. Enough reason for stricter regulations. In 2023, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) established a TDI (tolerable daily intake) of 0.2 nanograms per kilogram of body weight. This limit is 20,000 times stricter than before. A full ban is also in the works.
Our Gkazas tins
Now the million-dollar question: what are our tins made of, and do they contain BPA? Our tins are made of a metal called tinplate. To ensure they meet our own strict quality standards, they are tested in Europe. Once they pass this test, they receive European certification. This certification means they are BPA non-detectable and do not release any harmful substances. The coating inside the tins also doesn’t leach, so we can guarantee that no packaging material ends up in the olive oil. In short: our tins are tested, certified, and 100% safe.
Want to avoid BPA?
We totally get it—after reading the health risks above, you might want to avoid BPA altogether. And you can. The easiest way is to avoid pre-packaged foods as much as possible. That means buying fresh and local from producers you trust. Also, keep an eye out for EU-certified packaging. Finally, eating a varied diet helps reduce the risk of consuming high levels of any harmful substance if it’s present in your food.
Can or bottle?
Want to buy olive oil? We also explain why you might want to choose a can or a bottle. There are several good reasons to go for an olive oil can. It’s 100% light-proof. As mentioned earlier, cans don’t affect the taste of olive oil (even though that’s sometimes believed). Cans are also unbreakable, have a long shelf life, and—just like glass—are sustainable and perfectly recyclable, since they don’t lose quality. Because of all these benefits, canned olive oil is often cheaper than bottled. Cans can be filled more quickly, don’t need secondary packaging, and are easy to stack and transport.
But wait a second—you can also go for an olive oil bottle. To be fair, pouring from a bottle is a bit easier. Plus, tins can dent when bumped, which doesn’t happen with our sturdy bottles. And finally, looks matter too—and while taste is subjective, some people simply prefer how the bottle looks. Hmm… maybe a bottle it is? We’ll leave the choice up to you—we think both are beautiful.
