A list of classic Greek snacks, you’re probably looking forward to this! No matter how you look at it, somehow a Greek dish always ends up on the table during many occasions. Take a quick look at the list below.
Tzatziki
This classic from Greek cuisine is of course well known to all of us. A starter or side dish with yogurt, cucumber, garlic, olive oil, mint, and so on. The variations are countless. Delicious with bread, but definitely also as a sauce with meat. With a little luck, it’s packed with garlic, and you’ll smell it for two days, but how tasty it was!
Spanakopita
Some say Spanakopita might be the best appetizer from Greece. It’s a crispy filo pastry filled with spinach and spicy feta cheese. A classic start to an extensive dinner during a meal in Athens, Heraklion, or Thessaloniki.
Greek farmer’s salad
Simple, but oh so delicious. A salad with cucumber, onion, feta, tomato, olives, pepper, and olive oil. A little pepper and salt, divine! This is why it’s also very popular in the northern neighboring country of Albania. Almost every restaurant in both countries will serve this without hesitation.
Keftedes
Another delicious snack that is popular in Greece and its neighboring countries. Meatballs! Rudely put in English. Delicious Greek meatballs with tomato sauce and special herbs. You just have to try them.
Dolmadakia
Another tricky word. But so delicious. In Greece, they love to eat with mezedes: a kind of Greek tapas. A table full of snacks. A tasty and popular meze is dolmadakia. They are stuffed vine leaves with seasoned rice, vegetables, and meat.
Pita gyros
Ah, but not the soggy version you get in the Netherlands after a night out. A classic Greek pita bread is only found along the Mediterranean. Spiced pork, or chicken strips, fries, and a generous amount of tzatziki. Always a good idea.
Grilled souvlaki
A go-to dish in a Greek restaurant (even the one around the corner). And that’s for a good reason. The grilled meat skewer of lamb, beef, or pork is often marinated with herbs that you and I don’t even know. So you have to go to Greece for the real experience.
Squid
The tourist who has ever driven around a Greek island has probably seen it. Squids hanging on clotheslines to dry. A truly Greek picture. Squid rings, or kalamari, are almost always on the menu. But a stew with squid or stuffed squid is just as delicious. Don’t just focus on the rings!
Moussaka
This might be the most famous oven dish from Greek cuisine. But it’s not always easy to make it taste just right. The traditional dish is made with eggplant, potatoes, and minced meat. Sometimes topped with béchamel sauce and often flavored with onions, herbs, tomatoes, and wine.
Baklava
A Mediterranean dessert that many countries claim as their authentic dessert. Greeks are certainly fond of baklava. It’s of course very sweet, and you can almost immediately book an appointment with your dentist, but this filo pastry filled with finely chopped nuts and soaked in honey syrup is simply irresistible.
