No need to head to the hardware store for polish for your valuable wooden items! We’d love to introduce two natural methods to keep your wooden furniture (or toys) clean, shiny, strong, and durable—with olive oil!

Olive oil is incredibly versatile!

Olive oil is more versatile than most people realize. Naturally, we use it in cooking because olive oil is healthy. But there’s more to its power. Not only is it great for your body, it also works wonders on natural materials like wood! Ever thought about maintaining your guitar with olive oil?

Before we get into it, it’s good to mention that both methods only require non-virgin olive oil. Pomace olive oil is ideal. Want to learn more? Read what pomace olive oil is. That way, you can save your healthy extra virgin olive oil for food.

Method 1

You’ll need the following: olive oil, white vinegar, and a clean cloth.

The ratio: 3/4 olive oil, 1/4 vinegar. The total amount depends on the size of your wood—use your judgment here.

Mix the Greek olive oil and vinegar in a glass or ceramic bowl and gently apply it to the wood. Don’t rub it in! Let it soak in naturally.

Wait about an hour, then run your finger over the wood. If all goes well, the mixture will have absorbed completely and your finger won’t feel greasy. If it does, wait a bit longer or go over it again with a cloth.

Method 2

This method requires 2/3 olive oil and 1/3 fresh lime juice—and a cloth, of course.

Again, mix it in a glass or ceramic bowl and gently rub it into the wood.

With this method, the mixture may absorb into the wood during polishing, leaving no residue. If it does remain damp, let it air dry.

More tips…

  • First of all: don’t store these mixtures. Use them immediately and discard any leftover.
  • The first method absorbs deeply into the wood, making it ideal for larger objects.
  • The second method is better for cleaning (the lime scent is a bonus).
  • Only use white vinegar. Other types may stain the wood.
  • Speaking of stains: always test the mixture on a small patch first.

Of course, Gkazas Greek olive oil is a great way to give your wooden furniture a natural shine. Still, our olive oil is best enjoyed with food, especially since our organic olive oil is of the highest quality—just like the Greeks eat it themselves!
