Organic Olive Oil

The availability of organic products has been increasing for years. This also applies to the range of organic olive oils. But what does “organic” mean, how can you recognize organic olive oil, and is organic olive oil healthier and tastier? Come, let’s dive into the details together!

It starts with the organic certification...

So what exactly is organic food? Broadly speaking, it’s a certification. You can obtain this certification when you meet certain standards (more on that in a moment). The goal is to ensure that as much as possible is done to take animal welfare and the environment into account. Be sure to pay attention, as the certifications are important. The ones that count at the European level are: EKO, European Organic, and Demeter. Many supermarkets have also developed their own organic logos, but these are not universally recognized and may have their own set of rules.

What is organic olive oil?

Organic olive oil, according to European regulations, must meet the following criteria:

  • Products must consist of at least 95% organic ingredients
  • The origin of the ingredients must be clearly stated
  • No chemical pesticides have been used
  • No synthetic fertilisers have been used
  • Products with the Demeter and EKO certification meet the same requirements as those with the European organic certification
How do we comply with organic regulations?

How do we comply with organic regulations?

Our organic extra virgin olive oil meets the above regulations in the following way. Our olives, the only ingredient in our olive oil, are 100% organic. The olive trees grow completely naturally without the use of synthetic fertilizers or chemicals. We even take it a step further by not giving them extra water (they only receive water from natural rainfall). Lastly, we produce our olives ourselves, along with those from trusted farmers, so we know exactly where they come from and can provide proof of this!

How do you recognize organic olive oil?

Well, that’s why those organic certifications are so great. You can only use them when you meet all the requirements. Once you’re certified, you can place the logo on your products. The recognisable white leaf with white stars on an olive green background shows that our olive oil is organic. The government checks compliance with these regulations through SKAL, an organisation that inspects the entire production chain. From the harvest to the producer, and from transport to storage, all the way until you have a bottle (or tin) of organic olive oil in your hands! For your convenience, we’ve placed the European organic certification on our olive oil bottles and tins, so you can be sure that it’s truly organic.

Difference Between Organic Olive Oil and Sustainable Olive Oil

So, now we know what organic olive oil is, but is it also sustainable olive oil? Or at least olive oil produced in a more sustainable way? The answer is usually yes. Important factors here include soil quality and biodiversity, where organic olive farming has a more positive effect compared to conventional olive oil, as no synthetic fertilizers, extra irrigation, pesticides/chemicals, or water pollution are involved!

However, producing organic olive oil can also have some downsides. For instance, it can be more expensive (for both the producer and the consumer) due to higher production costs resulting from natural farming practices and the absence of pesticides and fertilizers. This also makes it more challenging to produce high-quality organic olive oil. For consumers, it becomes more expensive as not all olive groves produce organic olive oil. Less supply means higher prices…

Is organic olive oil better?

Is organic olive oil better?

It depends on how you define it. Organic olive oil leads to various benefits for health, the environment, and taste. However, it is more challenging to produce olive oil of the highest quality. This is easier with regular extra virgin olive oil because, for example, the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides allows for the cheaper production of high-quality oil.

All in all, it comes down to taste, and whether or not it’s organic is a factor. If you’re aiming for the highest quality olive oil, then being organic is decisive, and organic olive oil is therefore better. Here, you’ll find a detailed article on what makes the best olive oil if you want to know all the factors. We also have a comprehensive article written on whether organic olive oil is better.

And what about extra virgin olive oil?

Yes, simply choosing organic olive oil is, in our opinion and that of health experts, not enough. There are actually several different types of olive oil. Extra virgin olive oil, which our oil falls under, is the star of the show. This oil is made from the first cold press (without heating) using mechanical presses. The direct and cold pressing ensures that most of the nutrients are preserved and that the acidity does not exceed 0.8%. Additionally, the median score for the 12 olive oil defects must be 0, and the median fruitiness score must be above 0, otherwise, this type of oil cannot be called extra virgin.

Extra virgin olive oil results in a rich flavour and an oil where all the natural vitamins and minerals are retained. It’s perfect for cold use on salads or a piece of bread (delicious!), but as we now know, it’s also great for cooking and frying. In short: if you want the best type of olive oil, you need to go for organic, extra virgin olive oil!

Every winter, we harvest our Cretan olives. First, we gently knock them from the tree by hand. The olives are collected in nets so we can separate them from the leaves and branches. At the end of the day, all the harvested olives are placed together in jute bags and sent to the press.

The olives are washed, ground, and cold-pressed on the same day at a local press in Crete. The result is immediate: organic extra virgin olive oil. A pure and honest family product full of flavour and passion!

A Tribute to Organic Olive Oil

You can already tell, we are fans of organic olive oil. The strict certification we go through every year keeps us on our toes and ensures that we get the best out of our product. It challenges us to have everything in order, improves the quality of our Greek olive oil, and helps us think about our ecological footprint and how we can minimize it.
